HOW DO I "JOURNAL"?
Everyone has (and should have!) their own approach to journalling. For some, it is a daily, structured and methodical practise. For others, it's a tool to be used to work through an issue or an idea. I guess in some ways, I even journal about business ideas - jotting down notes, expanding upon them, and scribbling away to refine them.
WHAT SHOULD I JOURNAL ABOUT?
Journalling can sound intimidating, but it doesn't have to be complicated. I have a few approaches to it:
JOURNALLING FOR PROBLEM SOLVING
When I can't stop stressing or feeling upset about something, I grab my notebook and just write down everything that's bothering me. I vent. This often helps me to better understand what I feel and why, it enables me to order my thoughts. And at the very least I feel a weight lift off me just through getting everything out. I may repeat this process about an issue over and over, each time working through it a little more, making progress, and getting a little clearer. Sometimes, once is enough.
JOURNALLING TO BOOST POSITIVITY
If I am in a funny mood, feeling a bit grumpy or jealous, or if I have fallen into the 'comparison trap', I open up my 'little book of positivity' which I reserve for happy thoughts. I have a quick read through, remembering all the things I am grateful for, before adding a few more to the collection. It doesn't take long, but it never fails to lift my spirit.
JOURNALLING TO DIG A LITTLE DEEPER
Finally, I often use 'prompts' or questions, to encourage myself to expand my thinking and my understanding of myself. A prompt can encourage me to think of things I'd usually brush aside, and they have helped me to really understand what makes me happy, and what does not.
